Visitor lectures

During the course, we will have two visitors. One is from Plan and will talk to us about educational rights (Apr 24). The other one will be from Pakolaisapu (Apr 28) and will talk to us about his own experiences as a refugee in Finland.

Your task is to
1) attend both classes and take notes on both presenter's talks
2) write an essay of 150 to 250 words on one of the presentations (what was discussed, what feelings or thoughts it aroused)
3) for the other one, you will only hand in the notes you took during the presentation.

If you have a laptop you can bring to class, you're free to write your notes on your laptop. You will hand in the notes and the essay as a Google document and post the link as a comment to this blog post (NOTE: your comment will not appear in the comment box since I moderate the comments!).

Remember! This course does not have an exam so this work needs to be done in order to pass this course. So make sure you attend both classes! If you can't attend one of the classes (for a good reason, needless to say), you will be given an extra assignment to make up for the absence.

Vocabulary practice for text 1: Election day

Your first word test will be Wednesday the 22nd of April and it will cover the words from text 1, Election day. Make sure you learn the vocabulary of the text + p. 11 vocabulary related to Finnish politics.

Party leaders interviewed in English

Your first group assignment deals with the Finnish parliamentary elections.

1) Out of the major party leaders interviewed in English here, each group will choose one whose interview you want to watch.

2) You will then each individually watch the interview (about 10 minutes) and make notes on the following questions:

1. Mention three important topics that are discussed in the video and the changes that this party leader suggests.
2. What do they say about other parties? Which ones are they willing to cooperate with and which ones not? Why?
3. What could you say about this person's English? Do you notice them struggling with words? Overall, do they represent themselves and their party well in English?

3) After all of you have finished watching the video and making your notes, discuss these issues in English and combine your answers to write one analysis of the video on your group's blog. Include at least five words from the list on p. 11 and write them in bold in your text.

4) When you're done, write the address of your blog to the comment box of this posting!

Creating your group blog

1) Go to www.blogger.com
2) One person in your group will create the blog. He/she will then invite the other users in as writers (using the school account).
3) Add me (sannamariatarvainen@gmail.com) as a reader.
4) Your group postings will always be added through the "Tekstit" function. In addition, each of you will write their own page through the "Sivut" option.
